The Ngagane River flows through the reserve and the Chelmsford Dam, the third largest in the province, is the main attraction for swimming, boating, skiing, jet skiing, kite surfing and freshwater fishing.
The reserve is also well stocked with buck including the rare oribi as well as springbok, red hartebeest and blesbok. There are also well over 200 bird species in the park. Chelmsford is one of the few protected areas in KwaZulu-Natal that offers trophy hunting. Accommodation in Chelmsford consists of eight 5-bed chalets close to the water’s edge with beautiful views as well as two fully electrified campsites, Leokop with 10 sites and Sandford with 21. Caravans can be accommodated as well.
The Ncandu Nature Reserve in the northern Drakensberg is managed as an extension to Chelmsford although it is 40km away. This reserve consists of steep, forested gorges divided by grassland plateaus, with trails that wind down through sandstone cliffs into yellowwood forests following the Ncandu river valley with beautiful waterfalls. Accommodation is provided in a 4-bed rustic mountain hut. It is well worth a visit.

Mountain Biking on Normandien Pass

This 91-km, circuit route is an ideal ride for endurance training. The route is very scenic, meandering through the foothills of the Drakensberg. It is all along secondary dirt roads, except for a 21-km tarred stretch at the end of the route.
The Normandien Pass is the highlight of the ride. Stop and admire the view from ‘Noah’s Ark’, which is a large rock shaped like a boat, at the 57km mark. Ahead of you lies Newcastle and the charming Chelmsford Dam. The descent down Normandien Pass is steep and technically demanding, so make sure your brakes are in order.
